<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another craft beer bar opening, probably not that exciting right? I mean we are pretty spoiled for choice now days with venues opening up all the time but <a href="https://www.facebook.com/zerofoxbne/?fref=ts">Zero Fox</a> stands out from the crowd for me.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Located in the Wool Stores along the river in Teneriffe this small bar/restaurant is doing something different with it's food which is a big deal for me because I feel like we are nearing a saturation point when it comes to gourmet pub food and burger bars so it's refreshing to learn that Zero Fox offers Japanese food to go with your craft bevvies!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fox's <a href="https://lookaside.fbsbx.com/file/Zero_fox_menu_april2016_reviewed.pdf?token=AWy32o07Rez3eBWXW9E0dO7hHSl_ejhGI_k36dwTSbDA3yFWGgfwvH_vQQpKy1aEbaIOfXjR4VAM1XS85syh8eetmehSuyGapRWNqUDiCq6KOnsGc_wGaKqqVboVzGfO4YAWBWjqXoEKfhHAbsz-r8jv">menu</a> covers a broad range of food, most of which have a slight twist to them with bar standards like chicken wings or fries being jazzed up with kimchi and chilli sauce and Sushi offerings having weird sounding toppings like cheese sauce!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The kimchi fries are topped with cream and kimchi and whilst the combination may sound weird, it's basically a new take on potato with sweet chilli and sour cream and it is a welcomed re-invention as it's extremely tasty! (and yes, not Japanese)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YBWi7I3S4pI/Vy_KkiCxj_I/AAAAAAAABIQ/FIkQvJjSk1A2TucfrXe5v1HEWs7KqarWQCLcB/s1600/13211041_10154079093767954_1211663380_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-YBWi7I3S4pI/Vy_KkiCxj_I/AAAAAAAABIQ/FIkQvJjSk1A2TucfrXe5v1HEWs7KqarWQCLcB/s400/13211041_10154079093767954_1211663380_o.jpg" width="295" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most Australian's have had Sushi before as it's one of the most consumed foreign foods in this Country and something we've probably adopted as our own to some extent.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fox adds a twist to sushi by offering a range that stretches from butter chicken, to deep fried crispy chicken and cream cheese to softshell crap spider rolls.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lighter and more familiar options are offered as hoso rolls and nigiri as well some main sized bowls of chicken katsu, katsudon and udon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1QKYMpyzaCM/Vy_KkoOAkzI/AAAAAAAABIM/uo7GJ5Sikoce4F0TX1NTGm0VCDCAsImRwCLcB/s1600/13199433_10154079093937954_1280533477_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1QKYMpyzaCM/Vy_KkoOAkzI/AAAAAAAABIM/uo7GJ5Sikoce4F0TX1NTGm0VCDCAsImRwCLcB/s640/13199433_10154079093937954_1280533477_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Beer has not been forgotten either with a solid rotating tap list consisting of some great Australian beers, from stouts to IPA's you are sure to find something enjoyable on tap here that will match what ever you choose from the extensive food menu!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is also a small range of spirits, wines and bottled beer and cider available if nothing on tap garners your intrigue. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L0be7ymeQfg/Vy_KkgARKyI/AAAAAAAABII/MzGClxWEu6ksB8HE-NBFBq0tOWIeoikfwCLcB/s1600/13162330_10154079095362954_958709555_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L0be7ymeQfg/Vy_KkgARKyI/AAAAAAAABII/MzGClxWEu6ksB8HE-NBFBq0tOWIeoikfwCLcB/s400/13162330_10154079095362954_958709555_n.jpg" width="361" /></a></div>
<br />
Overall this is a great little venue with some friendly staff, excellent tasty and well priced food in a very comfortable location so if you are into Japanese food and good Australian beer get down and try it! Kanpai!<br />

<br />
This year was longer than the previous years sprawling itself over a Friday to Sunday period which made for a lot more events and a lot more on each weekend.<br />
<br />
This extended period whilst welcomed was also harder on the hip pocket for me so I was more selective with my choices but this wasn't a bad thing it just meant that I spent extra time working out which events I felt were value for money and had good unique beers.<br />
<br />
This philosophy led me to a venue that I admittedly hadn't spent nearly enough time in and that venue is <a href="https://www.facebook.com/themillonconstance/?fref=ts">The Mill on Constance St,</a> located in Fortitude Valley which it turns out had 2 really great value events and participated in a third.<br />
<br />
<b>Around the World in 18 Beers @ The Mill</b><br />
One of these events and a close second for my favourite of the paid events I attended, was Around the World in 18 beers which saw punters having awkward passport photos taken and then being sent on a journey to 9 different countries and breweries paired along with a few themed snacks to keep you rolling.<br />
<br />
Tickets were $50 but it was well worth it with almost zero queue times for beers due to multiple beer stations setup around The Mill all pouring 3/4 pots of beer which made for an ample amount of each beer to enjoy so big thanks to Gill, Jared and the rest of the Mill crew, nailed it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PaF5_sSuV6o/Vvw_bFitGDI/AAAAAAAABGo/88VuOZYOC-0EqNb1uJM7S5zrImLARMmuA/s1600/12887506_10153958207912954_110836804_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PaF5_sSuV6o/Vvw_bFitGDI/AAAAAAAABGo/88VuOZYOC-0EqNb1uJM7S5zrImLARMmuA/s640/12887506_10153958207912954_110836804_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Brews and Bacon - Bar Hop @ Various Venues</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My favourite paid event was <a href="http://brewsandbacon.com/">Brews and Bacon's</a> Bar Hop hosted by my mate (I think?) and long-term Brisbane beer community member Jason. This was easily the best value event during Brewsvegas with $30 giving each punter a pot of a specific beer style at 5 different venues as well as free and running commentary on the style by Jason and information about the venue from manager's, owners and bar staff.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a solid turn out of about 30 people all meeting at the excellent Bloodhound Bar a little ways up Brunswick St to enjoy a first beer before moving to Woolly Mammoth. After that it was to Kerbside for a relaxed chill out on the couches before a short stroll to The Mill and finally a drunkish walk to Newstead which was the furthest venue away but was worth itto finish with a Brewery tour with Head Brewer Mark who seemed excitedly happy to show our group around!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Overall a fantastic afternoon and absolutely one of my favourite events with a great bunch of friendly people all eager to talk about beer, make jokes and have some fun and I can't wait for something like it to come around again.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This years Brewsvegas also had a great and long list of free events with tap take overs and food matchings and even Ice-Cream featuring! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The two free entry events that I enjoyed the most were Bloodhound Bar's Hopfields 2 and The Scratch's Brewtal Brewing re-launch and tap takeover.</div>

<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Hopfield's @ Bloodhound</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bloodhound's Hopfield's event had plenty of expected hoppy goodness to keep most people interested but what really hooked me was my first visit of the new upstairs area, it is huge and really nice up there and soundly cements Bloodhound as one of the biggest craft beer venues in Brisbane</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I honestly enjoyed the lineup of the previous Hopfield's held late last year as it had more West Coast style IPA's but the atmosphere during Brewsvegas made this event just amazing with heaps of familiar faces joining in and having a few beers and plenty of conversation!</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Scratching an itch on the last Friday of Brewsvegas!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<b>Brewtal Tap Takeover/Relaunch @ The Scratch</b><br />
Brewtal's tap take over at The Scratch was equally as enjoyable but for fairly different reasons as for me and my buddies it was a great start to our afternoon where we brought in our own (oversized) platter of meat, cheese, bread and dip and feasted whilst partaking in some of the freshest and best brews from Brewtal.<br />
<br />
Again the atmosphere was great with a pretty large crowd attending for a Friday lunch packing out the Scratch whilst a live mural for Brewtal was painted inside by the talent <a href="https://www.instagram.com/georgielevi/">Georgie!</a><br />
<br />
I got to have a really good chat to Tim about his beers and can say that he has to be one of the most passionate and excited gypsy brewers we have in Brisbane and was serving up some super fresh West Coast Thrash IPA that just hit the spot, great afternoon!<br />
<br />
<b>After Thoughts</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
Not much to say really this year, although I do regret not going to the launch party but it did mean I was bright eyed and bushy tailed for the Mill event on the Saturday morning but next year I think I'll hit the launch regardless.<br />
<br />
Overall it was a great Brewsvegas again this year with some really interesting events going on and a decent balance between paid and free but there was a few events that whilst sounded good (on paper) were for me overpriced for what the description was but it's likely not an easy thing to balance out at times although I was impressed again by a few of Brisbane venues in what they were able to put on.<br />
<br />
Looking forward to Brewsvegas 2017 and beyond!RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-1997460006021580962016-01-20T10:23:00.003+10:002016-02-05T06:51:05.783+10:00First Impressions: Catchment Brewing Co. @ West End<a href="https://www.zomato.com/brisbane/catchment-brewing-co-west-end" target="_blank" title="View Menu, Reviews, Photos & Information about Catchment Brewing Co., West End and other Restaurants in Brisbane"><img alt="Catchment Brewing Co. West End is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with when you talk about where to get the best brews and eats in Brisbane and the addition of <a href="http://catchmentbrewingco.com.au/">Catchment Brewing Co.</a> simply strengthens this even more.<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A1LZl2IxUg8/Vp68i4pHQZI/AAAAAAAABEw/iY391Nsn6vQ/s1600/12207675_10153785707312954_2010193108_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A1LZl2IxUg8/Vp68i4pHQZI/AAAAAAAABEw/iY391Nsn6vQ/s320/12207675_10153785707312954_2010193108_n.jpg" width="179" /></a>Catchment is the second brewery in the last 12 months to take up residence in West End and it's great to have so many craft beer venues with good food all condensed in this one little area.<br />
<br />
Located at the Vulture street end of Boundary, Catchment is fairly easy to get with a 10 min walk from South Brisbane Station and the Cultural Centre bus way with plenty of buses going right into Boundary street as well.<br />
<br />
Catchment's art deco style exterior has been left intact and fits quite well into this architecturally older section of Brisbane.<br />
<br />
Inside is a clean layout of polished concrete, dark wood and black steel and out the back sits beautifully shiny brewing equipment in the middle of a large decked area with plenty of seating and some excellent murals on three of the walls giving a really fun vibe in quite a new looking space.<br />
<br />
Currently there are two house brewed beers on tap with Colonial Ale being a fairly refreshing golden ale style beer and Pale Select which hopefully requires no explanation..<br />
<br />
For me the Colonial went down a treat on a rather hot Brisbane day but I wasn't enjoying the Pale really at all, tasted a bit sweet and wasn't finding much character in it.<br />
<br />
Catchment also has a great selection of wines, a few ciders and plenty of bottled beers if you want to try something that's not on tap.<br />
<br />
The food has a really nice range from seafood like oysters and mussels to share platters of meats and cheeses as well as pizzas and burgers containing slow cooked meats.<br />
<br />
On the day I chose the Beef Brisket Burnt End burger with slaw on a brioche bun, the slaw gave a really nicemustard kick and some sweetness from the sauce but the burnt ends weren't as crunchy and roasted as I'd have expected and were a little chewy but overall it was pretty delicious!<br />
<br />
Catchment is a welcomed addition to what is slowly becoming one of the best strips for a craft pub crawl in Brisbane and as it is still in it's infancy I'm sure the beer and food will continue to evolve.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the saying goes, another Year, another Nude Calendar.. well ok that's not a saying however 2015 is drawing to a close and 2016 is just a hop, skip and a bees dick away.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The calendar launched this past Saturday (19th Dec) and cost a measly $20 clams from these 7 venues..</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Scratch Bar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Oxford Tap House</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Tipplers Tap</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bloodhound Bar</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fitz + Potts</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Saccharomyces Beer Cafe</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Wooly Mammoth</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There was also Karma kegs (pay what you want) of beers donated by a few local breweries to help launch the event with the proceeds also going to the charity.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is probably still some beer floating around from the event but there is definitely still a few calendars so why not give the gift of nakedness to your loved ones, scare your children or grand parents or just plain support our local community with proceeds from the calendar going to <a href="http://www.micahprojects.org.au/">Micah Projects</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Micah supports our local community assisting with homelessness, mental illness, domestic violence, disability and discrimination which are some pretty important issues that should be supported!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Holiday and you can expect more posts from me in 2016! </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://zepickle.com/">Ze Pickle </a>have been making waves on the Gold Coast for awhile now but I just never really had an opportunity to get down there but thankfully they have expanded to Brisbane so now it's way too easy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bringing similar stylings to the GC store with custom made metal work, light boxes and plenty dark wood with a deck extended all the way to the road this is a fairly impressive looking venue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We were there early on a Sunday for lunch, from 12 but didn't order until after 1 and the entire time we had prompt and friendly service for drinks and when we did order food the place was almost full but we got our burgers in about 15 minutes which is pretty good!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The <a href="http://zepickle.com/burgers/">menu</a> is all about the burgers and there is plenty of mouth watering options with some very different burgers like the 4:20am which is fried chicken in between two mac 'n' cheese waffles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went with the 3am which has a hand pressed wagyu patty, maple smoked bacon, fried cheese sticks, guacamole and ZP sauce. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It came out looking impressive, especially after I cracked the cheese sticks open and they gushed all over the burger but there was a few things that weren't great. The patty didn't fill the bun which meant the first bite was bread and cheese stick and the guac for me didn't really make sense, I guess it's there because the crumb on the stick does dry it out a bit so you need some extra sauce but overall it was pretty tasty.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ttkZOSzz92g/VnsIFjoQTLI/AAAAAAAABD0/COy8YA8v33g/s1600/12405110_10153718539627954_666472634_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ttkZOSzz92g/VnsIFjoQTLI/AAAAAAAABD0/COy8YA8v33g/s400/12405110_10153718539627954_666472634_o.jpg" width="386" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also ordered a serve of wings and ZP fries for our table, both of which were spot on with the wings having a nice coating with a crunch and plenty of tang from the buffalo sauce.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The ZP fries are loaded with beer cheese sauce, maple bacon bits and ZP sauce and are really something you need to share but are delicious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fimFB5v_EI8/VnsIGTX4V0I/AAAAAAAABD4/lTn9XxUYo0w/s1600/12400081_10153718539822954_804716575_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fimFB5v_EI8/VnsIGTX4V0I/AAAAAAAABD4/lTn9XxUYo0w/s400/12400081_10153718539822954_804716575_o.jpg" width="393" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
ZP also has a solid tap lineup with plenty of good spirits also but I was driving so I stuck to coke and a Reset Robot.<br />
<br />
Overall it was a really good first visit and I wish I'd made it to the GC venue earlier to check the place out but as far as first experiences go this was pretty great, good food and good service and real easy to park close to on a Sunday.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'll be back to try out another burger or two.</div>

<br />
For me it was my second ever venue post and somewhere that I frequented many times before I began writing my blog so it will always be remembered.<br />
<br />
An article recently posted by the good folk at <a href="http://www.brewsnews.com.au/2015/12/brisbanes-tipplers-tap-to-close-relocate-to-south-bank/">BrewsNews</a> broke the news to most of Tippler's past and present punters with 100's of comments being generated in a short period time, many of which were mourning the loss of this great bar in it's current form.<br />
<br />
It's all about progress in Newstead these days and it seems the industrial area that existed even just a couple of years ago is slowly being replaced by massive apartment blocks as a flock of giant cranes takes over and proceeds to modernise this area of Brisbane.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rLktwsWmqQM/VnCXVSV1QBI/AAAAAAAABDY/3Wq-aiKBfRM/s1600/12389042_10153705103627954_71630395_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="236" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rLktwsWmqQM/VnCXVSV1QBI/AAAAAAAABDY/3Wq-aiKBfRM/s640/12389042_10153705103627954_71630395_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Progress? Invasion from giant Metal monsters? nah it's just Newstead these days..</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hns_3vEkahY/Vm3kpk6HjZI/AAAAAAAABDI/N7EgJDZDn2M/s1600/12341540344_328da9c030.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Hns_3vEkahY/Vm3kpk6HjZI/AAAAAAAABDI/N7EgJDZDn2M/s320/12341540344_328da9c030.jpg" width="240" /></a>Due to this, the great people at Tippler's have had to make what I imagine was a heavy hearted decision to re-locate, opting to take advantage of their existing lease in South Bank at sister venue Tomahawk which will now become Tippler's Tap.<br />
<br />
Union, marriage, the coming together of two? It's usually a good thing right? Well time will tell in this case as a dark, dank basement style venue merges into an indoor / outdoor modern bar space in an area not known for dive bars or anything really that old.<br />
<br />
It's the right decision given the options with Tippler's lease due to end and the current building to be demolished and Tomahawk having a lease until 2018 but for me I know it won't ever feel the same, atmosphere wise but I am looking forward to seeing what is done with the space!<br />
<br />
But the transition won't be too heard for those that love Tippler's as the food it will largely be the same with the entire menu set to come across including the famous wing's and I'm hopeful the taco and rib nights will remain and you can expect a couple of additions from the Tomahawk menu.<br />
<br />
I could see chicken wings with caramel sauce becoming a thing? yes? no? maybe.. either way the food will be familiar.<br />
<br />
Tomahawk's tasting paddles, spirits range and take away drinking options will also remain. Did you know there are designated drinking areas in South Bank parkland?<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeZtdhI_Ej4/VnCaDprj2PI/AAAAAAAABDk/tUQiApD5SJs/s1600/12265868_1068812233138040_4629616377605965510_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZeZtdhI_Ej4/VnCaDprj2PI/AAAAAAAABDk/tUQiApD5SJs/s640/12265868_1068812233138040_4629616377605965510_o.jpg" width="640" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Tippler's $2 taco nights, making Tuesday cheap and delicious for the past few years!</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The intent is also to recycle as much of the fit out from Tippler's as possible so it will be interesting to see what Tomahawk transforms into.<br />
<br />
So when is all this happening? Well Tippler's last day of trade (in Masters St) is this Saturday the 19th of December and it's set to be a big one with more than a hundred people signed up to the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/1027308620667135/">facebook event</a> so I'd suggest if you want one last nostalgic trip down Tippler's lane you get in early.<br />
<br />
<strike>Tomahawk </strike>Tippler's will re-open in mid January 2016 in it's revitalized digs in South Bank to begin what is hopefully a new and prosperous era for this iconic piece of Brisbane's craft beer history.<br />
<br />
Long live TippleHawk!RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-63517463014945975852015-12-03T08:01:00.002+10:002015-12-03T08:09:30.849+10:00Media Release: Good Beer Co. - Drink Beer, Save the Reef!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.thegoodbeerco.com.au/"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wiEHAQ8yJz4/Vl9mCjqh7DI/AAAAAAAABC0/p0rQ-K2NY0c/s640/11036454_907285596027368_5768899750054422875_n.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A week ago on Wednesday night James Grugeon launched his <a href="http://www.thegoodbeerco.com.au/">Good Beer Co.</a> initiative in front of a solid crowd at Brisbane's Triffid music hall.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Good Beer movements aim is to partner with Breweries around Australia and also partner with a Charity with a percentage of the profits going to this Charity.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Essentially, <b>Good Beer that Does Good.</b></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first initiative sees James partnering with <a href="http://www.bargarabrewingco.com/">Bagara Brewing </a> and the <a href="http://www.marineconservation.org.au/">Australian Marine Conservation Society</a> to produce a crowd funded beer that will either be a White IPA or a Pale Ale based on votes that were made at the launch event.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To support this you can head over to the IndieGoGo crowd funding <a href="https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/the-good-beer-co#/">page</a> and pledge a donation for 6 packs or cases as well as other things like shirts and if you are a business you can request larger amounts.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The aim for now is to have this beer out sometime in February 2016 which in reality isn't that far away so if you want to help out a good cause and Save the Reef head on over and pledge a few dollary-do's!</div>

After hearing that the minds behind the excellent Gerard's bar and Bistro had created a new venue with 24 beer taps and casual American style cuisine in Newstead's Gasworks I knew I had to check out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thedefiantduck/?fref=ts">The Defiant Duck!</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I however think that maybe my expectations were too high and apologise in advance if this post comes across as too negative, it's not meant to be anything other than my opinion, experiences and hopefully some valid suggestions for improvement.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lets start with the beer, you'd be forgiven for assuming that a venue with 24 taps would have some local beer but unfortunately it looks like all of taps are contracted which in some ways is understandable (cost saving, maintenance etc). However I would like to have seen some good Australian Craft on tap or at the very least some local craft with two excellent Brisbane breweries within 1km of the venue.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What get's weirder is they seem to do a 'happy hour' that's suggests that you can get local beer at local prices but I'm not really sure what's considered local, Australian beer maybe?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That said you can get some bottled beer from local and Australian breweries which is in essence a good starting point and at least with 24 taps I was able to find a couple of decent beers from Creatures in the form of Dog Day's and Creature's IPA which both went down well on a warm as fuck day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R9pwmpQwNlw/Vl4k2e_mWGI/AAAAAAAABCc/LeM8xcgkoIY/s1600/12312527_10153677296237954_249517888_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R9pwmpQwNlw/Vl4k2e_mWGI/AAAAAAAABCc/LeM8xcgkoIY/s640/12312527_10153677296237954_249517888_n.jpg" width="584" /></a><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
Let's move on to the food, the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/download/1517746008552504/20151118%20TDD%20Food%20Menu%20WEB.pdf">menu</a> consists of American style food with corn dogs, crab cakes and wings filling up the snacks portion and burgers, beef ribs and fried chicken taking up the mains.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br />
It's a balanced menu with arguably something for everyone which is great and with a pretty solid amount of gluten free options as well which was excellent for one of my lunch crew.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The main difference to other venues in this medium-ish price range that's doing this type of food is something called The Josper Oven which seems to essentially be like a charcoal oven/gril that's used to cook a lot of the protein on the menu and can be pointed out by the big JO symbol next to the item.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started out with a serve of wings which came with a slightly vinegary, almost buffalo style sauce and a dressing and plenty of great tasting char but for $10 is verging a bit on the expensive side for five small wings but they were pretty good!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We also shared some gluten free mini corn dogs which were really delicious with what seemed like a maize flour and turmeric batter which was nice and crunchy encasing a small kranksy style sausage.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t61qEtMPE5M/Vl4k2bznfOI/AAAAAAAABCg/tpPIjXvMroo/s1600/12305485_10153677297492954_148199940_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-t61qEtMPE5M/Vl4k2bznfOI/AAAAAAAABCg/tpPIjXvMroo/s320/12305485_10153677297492954_148199940_n.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Then came the 'Classic Cheeseburger' which is what I was honestly really excited to try because Gerard's bar does a freaking incredible double patty cheese burger that puts many to shame and comes out juicy and medium.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Defiant Duck's version however was neither juicy, medium or really all that enjoyable with an incredibly spongie bun that tasted like it had too much bi-carb in it and a patty that definitely had that charcoal flavour but that was all it had as it was super dry and without enough sauce to carry it through.</div>
<br />
The Duck is a fairly new venue and may still be finding it's feet, webbed as they may be..<br />
<br />
There is a couple of things still left on the menu I would like to try mainly the mac n cheese croquettes and the toasted reuben sandwhich so I will likely go back a couple more times but as far as first impressions go I've had better.RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-80630844501824121212015-12-02T08:46:00.000+10:002015-12-14T06:55:07.265+10:00First Impressions: Barcadia @ Bulimba<a href="https://www.zomato.com/brisbane/barcadia-kitchen-bar-bulimba" target="_blank" title="View Menu, Reviews, Photos & Information about Barcadia Kitchen & Bar, Bulimba and other Restaurants in Brisbane"><img alt="Barcadia Kitchen & Bar Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato" src="https://www.zomato.com/logo/18016917/biglogo" style="border: none; height: 34px; padding: 0px; width: 104px;" /></a> <br />
Well this is a bit of a funny one, it's not really a first Impression because I've actually been to <a href="https://www.facebook.com/barcadiabrisbane/?fref=ts">Barcadia</a> a handful of times but I'm calling it a first impression because the only thing I ever eat there is the Buffalo Wings so I don't feel I've had enough of the menu to do a full post.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/barcadiabrisbane/?fref=ts">Barcadia</a> is a rather new edition to the beautiful riverside suburb that is Bulimba. Sitting about half way down the Oxford Street Strip with a largely open air venue but does have ample indoor seating and a slightly more formal sit down restaurant section.<br />
<br />
It's clean, fresh looking and has plenty of dark wood, metal and tiles which is almost everything you'd expect from a modern suburban bar these days.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6CBGQAkFTAk/Vl4ViErwP3I/AAAAAAAABCE/egknIEy1Gv0/s1600/12311984_10153677294657954_65416951_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6CBGQAkFTAk/Vl4ViErwP3I/AAAAAAAABCE/egknIEy1Gv0/s320/12311984_10153677294657954_65416951_n.jpg" width="274" /></a>There is 8 taps with mostly local and Australian beers and cider with local brewery <a href="http://newsteadbrewing.com.au/">Newstead brewing Co.</a> featuring on at least 1 tap most of the time and usually a mid strength or two for the designated driver or light drinker.<br />
<br />
The bottled and can range is where it's at for me with some great beers and breweries in the fridge although staff do occasionally require some direction as to which beer is which when ordering from the fridge but I've had several enjoyably fresh tasting cans of Pirate Life here.<br />
<br />
It would be nice to see an IPA or two on tap but I realise this is still a novelty to most people.<br />
<br />
The food is a mix of bar snacks likes wings, ribs and tacos with the sit down dining area offering up full meals of house made gnocchi and steaks etc.<br />
<br />
For me it's all about the Buffalo Wings. Coming in serves of 6 ($9) or 12 ($15) they may seem to be a little on the pricey side but they are usually huge wings and it seems that if the chef thinks they aren't big enough you often get a couple extra per serve.<br />
<br />
They are the perfect blend of franks red hot and vinegar with a great little bit of heat coming through after a few wings, certainly enough to give me a bit of a sweat after 12 of them.<br />

The only other thing I've eaten at Barcadia is the pork rinds because pigs are the bestest most delicious of animals and I can't go past some scratchings. Coated in fennel and flour and fried these are pretty great and marry well with any beer but eating too many does seem to make a sort of gummy paste in your mouth after awhile but nothing more beer doesn't solve.<br />
<br />
Overall I'm happy so far to have Barcadia as one of my local go to venues if for nothing else then crazy delicious wings!<br />
<br />
[Edit] December 2015 - Since I wrote this the menu has become one single menu at Barcadia and they've kept most of the bar food the same but added a Burger and some other things so I'll endeavour to get back and get some shots of something other than wings! Maybe..RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-2964765251958929772015-10-28T18:00:00.002+10:002015-10-28T18:06:34.522+10:00Fitz + Potts @ Nundah - It's a bar and it's open this Saturday!For those local to Brisbane's North Side it should be no surprise that there hasn't really been any half way decent craft bars around but that will change this Saturday as <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fitzandpotts/?fref=ts">Fitz + Potts</a> finally opens!<br />
<br />
First time bar owners Brett Fitzpatrick and Cass Potts have worked tirelessly (as well as their volunteers) over the past couple of months renovating the space and getting it ready for opening day.<br />
<br />I couldn't be more excited for them as they are both amazing people and am excited myself to have a craft bar in Nundah for a change!<br />
<br />
With an open air astro-turfed balcony, a large bar area and several kitsch themed rooms to hang out in as well as a beer, wine and spirit list that features all Australian products it's sure to kick off with a bang!<br />
<br />
Food will also feature local and Australian produce with meat and cheese platters, jaffles and plenty of veggie options too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
So even if you had something booked for Saturday afternoon, cancel it and get your ass to mars and by mars I mean Nundah and by Nundah I mean<a href="https://www.facebook.com/fitzandpotts/?fref=ts"> Fitz + Potts</a> for the 3pm opening!<br />

<br />
In an effort to continuing meeting the hefty demand for their beer Newstead made the decision last year to contract brew out of Sydney with <a href="http://www.brewpack.com.au/">BrewPack</a>. This was taken somewhat controversially by a lot of people in the beer community especially those that would be considered to be in the 'hardcore' end of the beer geek pool.<br />
<br />
Whether you liked the contract brewing decision or not it was a smart business decision that has led to Newstead's beer going state and nationwide in stores like Coles owned 1st Choice Liquor.<br />
<br />
It makes sense that if you put your roots down in Queensland you would eventually like to bring all of your business back to Queensland as it creates jobs and boosts the local economy so it's a logical leap that Newstead are now looking to expand operations locally to meet the increased demand.<br />
<br />

A proposal is currently lodged with Brisbane City Council that could see what would potentially become Brisbane's largest Queensland owned Brewery move into Milton. <br />
<br />
The move to Castlemaine St which is just down the road from the monolithic and foreign owned juggernaut that is XXXX could be seen as a challenger entering the Lion's den or just as an opportunity to expand.<br />
<br />
The new venue would encompass a 2300 square metre space with offices, a large brewery and bar, all just a bees dick from Suncorp Stadium making it potentially the closest venue for sports fans to get a tipple.<br />
<br />
The idea has been brewing for awhile and whilst it has not passed council yet it has has recently been brought to light publicly by way of an article in a <a href="http://quest.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/iphone/homepage.aspx#_title86472015102100000000001001/watitle86472015102100000000001001/8647/86472015102100000000001001/1/true">Quest Community Paper</a>.<br />
<br />
I'm sure like the decision to contract brew, the idea of a new, large local brewery and bar will create some controversy and discussion.<br />
<br />
Personally I feel it's a good thing to create jobs and inject cash into QLD and is just another sign that good beer, made locally is in demand and the growth of the Australian beer industry continues.<br />

I don't often post about food trucks but there is quite a large amount of them around Brisbane now and each one offers it's own little twist on it's chosen cuisine of choice.<br />
<br />
You would be forgiven for seeing the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/micasafoodtruck?fref=ts">Micasa</a> menu and assuming it's just another burger joint but it's all about the finesse and the flavour with this welcome edition to Brisbane's fleet of food trucks!<br />
<br />
Micasa mixes and marries American and Mexican street food into some epic burgers and tasty handcut fries.<br />
<br />
Burgers range from a standard cheese burger to The American which is beautiful creation consisting of lettuce, tomato, burger patty, American cheddar, chorizo, bacon and an onion ring with a tasty BBQ sauce.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jhxMw5H2l54/ViAyvjiQAEI/AAAAAAAABAw/JgreGY1VLn8/s1600/IMG_20150929_114304.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jhxMw5H2l54/ViAyvjiQAEI/AAAAAAAABAw/JgreGY1VLn8/s640/IMG_20150929_114304.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
They also do some fairly delicious handcut fries but it doesn't stop there as you can get cheese added to the fries or even a loaded fries with bacon, cheese and other goodness!<br />
<br />
The American was the obvious (burger) choice for my first Micasa experience and didn't disappoint, it's just the perfect mix of flavours in a satisfying all in one meal.<br />
<br />
Jump over to the Micasa facebook page and check out where they'll be next and pay them a visit as I can all but guarantee you a visit to flavour town if you are a burger fan!RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-10489825973589966752015-10-16T09:08:00.000+10:002015-10-16T09:08:24.138+10:00Brew Master's @ Grange<a href="https://www.zomato.com/brisbane/brew-masters-grange" target="_blank" title="View Menu, Reviews, Photos & Information about Brew Masters, Grange and other Restaurants in Brisbane"><img alt="Brew Masters Menu, Reviews, Photos, Location and Info - Zomato" src="https://www.zomato.com/logo/17972791/biglogo" style="border: none; height: 34px; padding: 0px; width: 104px;" /></a> <br />
Live on Brisbane's Northside? Craving a satisfying and generous Burger? If your answer to either of these questions is Yes! then read on as we delve into the tasty, somewhat hidden spot that is <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Brewmasterscoffee">Brew Master's</a> at Grange.<br />
<br />
I say Brew Master's is hidden because it's not really in a big shopping complex or anything like that, it's down a fairly standard road in Grange and if you weren't looking for it you may drive past assuming it was just another coffee shop.<br />
<br />
I can tell you that's not the case as this North Side gem is hiding some of the biggest, tastiest and well priced burgers going around Brisbane.<br />
<br />
The BM <a href="http://www.brewmasters.com.au/menu">menu</a> consists of breakfast favourites like bacon & eggs, waffles, croque madame or a simple avocado and haloumi toast, all served until 11am and then the lunch fair ranges from chicken wings and salt and pepper squid to grilled fish, house-made falafel and of course giant and delicious burgers!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vi4vMVIBLio/ViArfPBzs0I/AAAAAAAABAY/Hfb82L0ssJo/s1600/IMG_20150927_153349.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vi4vMVIBLio/ViArfPBzs0I/AAAAAAAABAY/Hfb82L0ssJo/s320/IMG_20150927_153349.jpg" width="320" /></a>The burger options are actually quite interesting, in a world where the American style cheeseburger has become a staple it is oddly absent from the menu but this isn't a bad thing as there is plenty of other delicious options.<br />
<br />
On our first visit I went with the Beef & Blue cheese burger which was not only packed with blue cheese flavour, juicy and slightly pink beef but also had an amazing caramelised onion relish which really set the burger off due to the sweetness in the onions complimenting the richness of the beef and blue cheese.<br />
<br />
On our second visit I chose the monstrous Double Beef & Bacon and there is no kidding around here, this thing is huge like almost unfinishable huge.<br />
<br />
Two thick beef patties with cheddar melted over them, bacon, lettuce, tomato and a tasty BBQ sauce make up this beast!<br />
<br />
It's so big that I opted to take a patty off and eat it with a few chips and a fork so I could get my mouth around the rest of the burger, it really is big enough for two with or without a side of fries!<br />
<br />
If you live around the Grange/New Market area it would be very easy to make Brew Master's your new local burger shop although the coffee, breakfast and even a cold Burleigh Brewing Pale Ale make it worth a visit.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For your average person, working a full time job or studying and sharing a life with a partner or having children can seriously reduce your time to hang out at bars, go out for dinner or simply catch up with friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It is the moments though, when you put the logistics aside and really make time (or it simply falls into place) that create the best memories. (the beer really helps too!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<br /><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On a recent RDO (Roger Day Off) I was able to find some time to spend an afternoon with two appropriately beery lads in the Canadian-almostbutnotquite-Australian, <a href="http://brewsandbacon.com/">Brews and Bacon</a> and the handsome specimen that is <a href="http://chasingale.com/">Chasing Ale</a>.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's the bringing together of beer and friendship that can really create a fun, laid back atmosphere and this case I was a sort of casual observer of a Blind Tasting being performed by Bacon and Chasing for which you should be able to read more about soon on their respective blogs.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chatting, listening to a few tunes and sinking a few quality IPA's whilst watching the boys chew through a few less than stellar stouts and mull over their tasting notes was an entertaining afternoon for yours truly.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the day wore on we moved onto a couple of big bottles I had been saving to share in Stone's RuinTen and Thunderstruck which were both pretty delicious beers and probably acted as a good palate cleanser after a bunch of stouts.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VTwpsaeGSmk/VgtO9dLQiKI/AAAAAAAABAE/NGy0sT4eSGw/s1600/IMG_20150916_161735-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VTwpsaeGSmk/VgtO9dLQiKI/AAAAAAAABAE/NGy0sT4eSGw/s640/IMG_20150916_161735-01.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
The enjoyment of the afternoon really made my think "why don't I/we do this more often" and them realisation that I don't genuinely sit down with good mates and drink beer enough. Certainly not compared to how many brews I <a href="https://instagram.com/rpmbeer/">Insta-Blog</a> whilst sitting in the apartment with the girlfriend.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
So as a human on planet earth with the ability and freedom to choose what I do, I intend to make more of a conscious effort to engage those who I call 'mates'.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
So if you are suffering from a similar experience to me, find a balcony, preferably one you or your mates own.. and then grab a few of those mates and some crispy, dank or dark brews and chill out an embrace the friendship that like-minded beer buddies bring!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's not that often that I venture out to a coffee shop and it's not that I don't love coffee because I really do it's just that I tend to be eating breakfast at home which almost always contains a coffee so when I do get out it's usually for lunch or dinner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sometimes though it's nice to find a good coffee shop and one that's close by to where you live is always a good thing, that's where <a href="http://www.dandeliondriftwood.com/#!/home">Dandelion & Driftwood</a> comes in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Located on Brisbane's often forgotten North-side, down an inconspicuous (but very pretty) suburban street this small, quaint coffee shop sits.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a weekday when we visited and fairly late morning so there wasn't a lot of people but I imagine on a weekend morning this venue gets full fairly fast.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There is a couple of tables out the front, a few out the back in a courtyard area and a few two seater tables and one big bench inside.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was a warm day so we chose to sit inside with the air-con and ordered a coffee to start.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Dandelion is a full on legit coffee shop with it's own blends and roastery and if like me you don't really know the in's and outs of coffee this can seem overwhelming but a short chat with the friendly staff will sort out a blend appropriate to your palate.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If nothing else a visit to Dandelion has made me hungry for a full education on all thing's coffee especially as a lot of the bitterness, grassy and earthy tones feed into beer's malt characters.<br />

Now it's not just about Coffee there is also a nice range of Teas and a fairly extensive food menu for such a small venue!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd been craving a good waffle lately so we decided to order both a savoury and a sweet to share.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We chose the First Crack which was a cheese and chive waffle served with bacon, rocket, blend smoked honey and cream cheese and I can tell you that it was hands down the best waffle I have ever had and I can't wait to go back for it again.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-psfcPclbyn0/Vf-HBxfyA3I/AAAAAAAAA-4/Rbnf8D5SeV8/s1600/IMG_20150916_114559.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-psfcPclbyn0/Vf-HBxfyA3I/AAAAAAAAA-4/Rbnf8D5SeV8/s640/IMG_20150916_114559.jpg" width="590" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our sweet choice was the 'Extract the Sweetness' which was a delicious fluffy waffle with sliced banana and house-made caramel fudge sauce with vanilla ice-cream. I'm not a huge fan of banana but the combination with the caramel and the ice-cream made this pretty amazing.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm glad it was a quiet day when we visited as it was great to chat to Peter about the business, blend smoked honey and even a little bit about the relationship that coffee and beer has.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Can't wait to pick another quiet mid-week day or late weekend morning to visit again and can't believe that I hadn't been to Dandelion before now!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I drink a lot of beer but it's not always local or Australian. There is nothing wrong with this as I've never been shy about the fact that for me the beer journey is about unique beer from anywhere but I would like to show off some more local beer both from Brisbane and other parts of Australia, especially those with core ranges to entice new drinkers.<br />
<br />
So sometime in the next couple of weeks I will be starting a new feature for these local beers, starting with Mt Tamborine's <a href="https://www.facebook.com/fortitudebrewingcompany?fref=ts">Fortitude Brewing</a> \ <a href="https://www.facebook.com/NoisyMinor?fref=ts">Noisy Minor </a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A5QGOnZRLI4/Vd0AOXU1vUI/AAAAAAAAA-c/rFGBV4bIIec/s1600/2015-08-26%2B09_53_50-RPM_%2BBeer%2B_%2BFood%2B_%2BRandom%2B%2528%2540rpmbeer%2529%2B%25E2%2580%25A2%2BInstagram%2Bphotos%2Band%2Bvideos.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-A5QGOnZRLI4/Vd0AOXU1vUI/AAAAAAAAA-c/rFGBV4bIIec/s400/2015-08-26%2B09_53_50-RPM_%2BBeer%2B_%2BFood%2B_%2BRandom%2B%2528%2540rpmbeer%2529%2B%25E2%2580%25A2%2BInstagram%2Bphotos%2Band%2Bvideos.png" width="387" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fortitude's current core range consists of Pacer (2.8% abv), Golden Ale (4.3% abv.), Anzus IPA (6% abv.) and Admiral Ackbar (8.5% abv).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
I will be doing a review of each beer and also offering some food recommendations and possibly a recipe.<br />
<br />
This idea will continue with Newstead Brewing Co. and later Green Beacon and I may try and get my hands on some other local bottled beer to review or move on to core ranges of Australian craft beer.<br />

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BRhro5MEymw/Va2GLmLgPgI/AAAAAAAAA8g/lDIWwsKiXzc/s1600/11778065_10153413585361211_249783220_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BRhro5MEymw/Va2GLmLgPgI/AAAAAAAAA8g/lDIWwsKiXzc/s200/11778065_10153413585361211_249783220_n.jpg" width="200" /></a>I often drag my girlfriend along to all the craft beer places I go and although a lot of the time it's to eat delicious food as well, my motives are usually to have a couple of beers with lunch. So it makes sense that I should go somewhere she wants to go right?<br />
<br />
This is case with <a href="https://www.facebook.com/PawpawCafe?fref=ts">PawPaw</a> in Wollongabba but it's not like she had to drag me kicking and screaming to a place that serves relatively healthy fare because it's honestly pretty darn tasty!<br />
<br />
We've been once before for Cocowhip which is super popular because it's basically healthy 'ice-cream' as it's made from coconut water and a coco probiotic, kinda like a frozen coconut yoghurt.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nrWjmsOsMS4/Va2GLkMuSLI/AAAAAAAAA8c/sozHQvhHcZ4/s1600/11774316_10153413585711211_915781917_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-nrWjmsOsMS4/Va2GLkMuSLI/AAAAAAAAA8c/sozHQvhHcZ4/s200/11774316_10153413585711211_915781917_n.jpg" width="200" /></a>But more recently we returned for lunch in which I didn't stray too far from my norm, ordering a braised beef cheese burger and the gf ordered the Avocado Plate with eggs which she enjoyed!<br />
<br />
My burger was impressive looking with chunks of beef falling out and plenty of sauce and mustard and a big chunk of tomato which worked surprisngly well to carry the flavour of everything.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KnNbuYk1dC0/Va2GLnEUq-I/AAAAAAAAA8k/9vd6_hNtWMM/s1600/11748779_10153413585521211_748104590_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KnNbuYk1dC0/Va2GLnEUq-I/AAAAAAAAA8k/9vd6_hNtWMM/s200/11748779_10153413585521211_748104590_n.jpg" width="200" /></a><br />
<br />
The chips were awesome, who doesn't love huge chunky chips? Would have preferred aioli over tomato sauce but it was all still delicious!<br />
<br />
PawPaw is a decent spot and now that they've taken over a bigger space in the same complex there is a bit more room but it still gets super busy at peak times and can be a bit warm inside but it's a like-able place to go for a decently healthy feed.<br />
<br />

</div>
<a href="https://www.zomato.com/brisbane/donut-boyz-west-end" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img alt="Click to add a blog post for Donut Boyz on Zomato" src="https://www.zomato.com/logo/17972965/minilink" style="border: none; height: 36px; padding: 0px; width: 130px;" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's really been the year of the doughnut in Brisbane with several new vendors popping up offering hand crafted goodies all with different and in some cases unique toppings.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Unfortunately for me my experiences with some of the other franchises hasn't been that positive with large doughnuts being basically just that dough in the shape of a nut and not much else going on.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The newest player on the doughnut field is <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Donut-Boyz/">Donut Boyz</a> from the minds behind <a href="https://www.facebook.com/helloharrytbj?fref=ts">Hello Harry </a>on the Sunshine Coast which for me has the best tasting beef burgers I've had to date.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fortunately for me and everyone else in Brisbane, they are also making some of the best Doughnuts going around with some of the most unique flavours and to top it off they are priced fairly.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The first store was opened on the Sunshine Coast at the Big Top but there is now a store in Mooloolaba as well as two in Brisbane at West End and Petrie Terrace.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jL91ABB_ODE/Va1i9dVeAvI/AAAAAAAAA8E/qDSboodfMCM/s1600/IMG_20150718_161146.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jL91ABB_ODE/Va1i9dVeAvI/AAAAAAAAA8E/qDSboodfMCM/s640/IMG_20150718_161146.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We visited the West End store recently, well if you can call a shipping container outside Boundary Street Markets a store but it is open 7 days a week!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We picked up 2 doughnuts, chocolate filled and lemon meringue along with a blueberry filled cronut.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pick for me is the lemon meringue which is odd because I don't like meringue on it's own but it's really soft having only been blow torched not baked and the doughnut is filled with a perfectly made lemon curd that tastes incredible.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It cost $15 for 3 doughnuts which may sound like a bit but it would cost you $20 for 2 doughnuts and a cronut from one of the other places in Brisbane.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you like doughnuts you should check it out, I know I'll be back!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Tapsthevalley?fref=ts">Taps </a>isn't a new concept for Queensland and the Mooloolaba venue has been going strong for a few years now but we are finally graced with the idea in Brisbane, smack bang in the middle of the Valley mall!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are unfamiliar with the concept though, it's pretty simple! Taps is a venue where you pour your own beer from a solid selection of craft taps at both a wall and at each individual indoor table.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TUgrA65TQSQ/Vax-42Wo5pI/AAAAAAAAA7w/v8EiLDvEM9s/s1600/IMG_20150705_151119.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-TUgrA65TQSQ/Vax-42Wo5pI/AAAAAAAAA7w/v8EiLDvEM9s/s400/IMG_20150705_151119.jpg" width="331" /></a></div>
What this means is at anyone time there might be anywhere from 10-20+ brews on offer and you can go from table to table and pour from the taps if you wish to try something different each time or simply stick to your favorite.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But how does this work, it's not just a free for all right? Correct, that would be insane and totally not responsible.. (but kind of fun..). You are required to purchase a token that you touch to the taps to pour which measures your pour and tells you how much you have left on your token.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You can purchase up to around $50 at a time and then have to return to the bar to get more if you aren't done by that point! You can also take the token home with you until the next you come back, its all part of the $5 token price, so even if you leave money on it you can use it next time.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The couple of times I've been at Taps since it opened they have had a good selection of Australian beer from Holgate to Six String as well as some local Brisbane breweries (which is great!), along with a couple of American beers too.<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The food consists of pub grub and share food like sliders, calamari, chips and other perfectly matched beer food including one of my favourite things, Fried Mozzarella sticks which are just delicious and go great with an IPA!<br />
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GfmKTFDZZoE/Vax64bbKaKI/AAAAAAAAA7c/qyOOVfa58lE/s1600/IMG_20150715_162516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GfmKTFDZZoE/Vax64bbKaKI/AAAAAAAAA7c/qyOOVfa58lE/s400/IMG_20150715_162516.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
Taps is a solid addition to the craft scene on the mall side of the valley and hopefully they can have some rare craft on and not just some mainstream stuff but it's a far cry from the pubs full of macro lager that existed in the valley even just a few years ago.</div>

West End is fast becoming an excellent spot for drinking a few brews or enjoying some delicious eats and I'm really loving the vibe it has now, possibly more than any other part of the City.<br />
<br />
I've said it before but breakfast food is an absolute winner in my books and if you make it an all day affair like <a href="https://www.facebook.com/suburbanwestend?fref=ts">Suburban</a> do then it's a double win for me!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kcVm0iR9M6Y/VaxnXDU0zRI/AAAAAAAAA68/-fGdDBFCNos/s1600/11751299_10153410827721211_587535706_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kcVm0iR9M6Y/VaxnXDU0zRI/AAAAAAAAA68/-fGdDBFCNos/s200/11751299_10153410827721211_587535706_n.jpg" width="200" /></a>I've dropped into <a href="https://www.facebook.com/suburbanwestend?fref=ts">Suburban</a> a few times now both for an early breakfast and later for brunch and each time the service and food have been great with some really friendly staff providing table service.<br />
<br />
So what sets it apart from everywhere else? Well apart from Breakfast being served all day they have a huge menu that caters for breakfast to lunch with drinks from standard coffee to giant mugs called Supernova's, fresh juice, Kombucha, milkshakes and even beer, wine and liquor.<br />
<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SGLi4ueqVUA/VaxnXUcjFwI/AAAAAAAAA6w/bX_qvT8HkVA/s1600/11774317_10153410827636211_447603245_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-SGLi4ueqVUA/VaxnXUcjFwI/AAAAAAAAA6w/bX_qvT8HkVA/s200/11774317_10153410827636211_447603245_n.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Buttermilk Pancakes</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The menu ranges from the huge King's Breakfast which as the name suggests is an indulgent, gluttonous delight with bacon, eggs, haloumi, sausages, thick-cut toast, tomato and a potato, feta and chive hash cake to Buttermilk Pancakes with chocolate ganache and house-made peanut butter.<br />
<br />
This means there is almost guaranteed to be something on the menu to satisfying anyone!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7fOUyqXDY6Y/VaxnXYhKF9I/AAAAAAAAA6s/Xhbj8OR6dKs/s1600/11778193_10153410827506211_1986570931_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7fOUyqXDY6Y/VaxnXYhKF9I/AAAAAAAAA6s/Xhbj8OR6dKs/s400/11778193_10153410827506211_1986570931_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On our most recent visit my girlfriend had Eggs Benedict which comes with a fluffy potato hash cake which is delicious!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went with something different (for a change.) and chose the Baked Egg Shakshuka which is a middle eastern spiced tomato sauce with pulled pork, capsicum, beans, with an egg cracked over the top and served with thick cut sourdough.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It was amazing on a cold morning, (well as cold as Brisbane gets..) it went down a treat. There is just something about spicy tomato sauce with pork and eggs and some toast to sop it all up!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

If you like breakfast and you like it all day then check out <a href="https://www.facebook.com/suburbanwestend?fref=ts">Suburban</a>, I'm looking forward to trying something different next time!RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-43533070056457688742015-06-11T10:23:00.001+10:002015-06-11T10:23:23.561+10:00Perception and Mass Produced "Craft" Beer<b>Perception</b>, we deal with it in our lives constantly, whether at work or in our personal lives with perceived opinions from the way we dress, do our hair or the way our friends and family think we live our lives.<br />
<br />
This is not something new to craft beer either, but it has been grating my cheese lately with a solid chunk of the community adopting this absolutely steadfast resolve that if it's marketed or in anyway produced by a big corporation than the beer most certainly is awful.<br />
<br />
But is it? I mean if you just drank something, not knowing where it came from, enjoyed it and were then told that it's owned by a giant global corporation do you then run to your fridge or recycling bin and destroy any remaining evidence that you consumed this product? Generally, no you wouldn't because who gives a shit? Right?<br />
<br />
Well it seems that some people actually act like this, oh god, that's owned by Coke? fuck its awful I'm never drinking it again.. Wait, you just said 10 minutes ago it was good? YEAH but that was before I knew Coke were involved, god it's so bad...<br />
<br />
Strong logic there buddy.<br />
<br />
What in the actual fuck? Am I joking from the above? hell no, I've witnessed this behavior several times in the last couple of months, replace Coke with what ever mega-corp you want but the circumstances are the same.<br />
<br />
If your best mates insult you because you drink beer from James Squire, Yenda, Matilda Bay or some other large Australian "Craft" brewery then you have to question "are these really my mates?" not "are you kidding?, that beers made by so and so?" because the reality is if you enjoyed a beer regardless of who it's made by and you'd drink it again then just do it.<br />
<br />
If you happen to be fairly new to craft beer and your learned friends are insulting your choices, they are dicks. Not a single person that drinks the latest Double IPA Black Imperial Yolo Barleywine started on that because they'd have fucking spat it out if they did.<br />
<br />
The point is that as your palate develops you may leave this type of beer behind or you might revisit it every now and then, this is the evolution of enjoying more and more unique beers and should not be seen as a negative as for the most part it is where a vast majority of craft drinkers started.<br />
<br />
I personally drank my way through way hundreds of European beers from every lager and pilsner under the sun to Belgian Tripel's and Quads before Australian staples like Cooper's pale and sparkling and beers from James Squire.<br />
<br />
It's all part of the journey, the company that created the beer should matter less than whether you enjoyed it. If your enjoyment is changed by finding out who made the beer then I suggest before you buy it, you go and google it so you can save us all the trouble of reading your bullshit crying about where the beer has come from because in reality if you cared so much you'd be doing this in the first place.<br />
<br />
<b>TLDR, If you liked it, just drink it.</b><br />
<br />

<a href="https://www.facebook.com/BacchusBrewing?fref=ts">Bacchus Brewing</a> in Capalaba will be hosting an event on the Saturday and Sunday the 20th & 21st of June to coincide with the Winter solstice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/484123958401973/?ref=98">Brumalia </a>event will not just be an excuse to drink beer, well it is but it's also going to see 25 beers on tap that are largely all brewed in collaboration with other breweries from around Australia.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The list is extensive with a lot of popular and well known breweries getting involved including XXXX, Ekim, Green Beacon, Brewcult and way too many to list here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Fortunately a few of Brisbane's beer bloggers were also invited to brew a beer which for someone like me was pretty exciting as I haven't had much exposure to brewing, home brew or otherwise.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So myself, Darren from <a href="http://250beers.com/">250 Beers</a>, Judd from <a href="http://www.brewedcrudeandbitter.com/">Brewed, Crude and Bitter</a>, Darren from <a href="http://craftbeerscapade.com/">Craft Beerscapade</a>, Jason from <a href="http://brewsandbacon.com/">Brews & Bacon</a> and Dave from <a href="http://instagram.com/beerfoodbrisbane">BeerFoodBrisbane</a> (Instagram) made our way out to Bacchus early one week day morning to brew.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n5glq5IkcNA/VW5RHHaaXqI/AAAAAAAAA5c/Wb5rSsj0cZg/s1600/11393021_984316028254328_6281860664463358114_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-n5glq5IkcNA/VW5RHHaaXqI/AAAAAAAAA5c/Wb5rSsj0cZg/s400/11393021_984316028254328_6281860664463358114_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The rules for Brumalia were pretty simple, pick any style but the beer has to be dark so we went with a Black Saison and used a new hop variety called Equinox which has some nice peppery, earthy notes that should pair well with the style chosen.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As the event gets closer we need to come up with a name for the beer and given how great the community is in Brisbane we wanted to involve everyone and give them a chance to come up with a name and potentially win a Brumalia shirt.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
To participate all you need to do is send an email to <a href="mailto:NameOurBrumaliaBeer@hotmail.com">Name Our Brumalia Beer</a><span class="text_exposed_show" style="display: inline;"> with what you would call the beer.</span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: 6px;">
Competition closes Saturday 6th June at Midnight so email ASAP to have a chance and help us name the Blogger's Black Saison..</div>

If you follow any foodies on social media, attend any of the Thank Truck its Thursday events or frequent Rocklea markets you would be hard pressed to have not heard of or at least seen the delicious and huge portions of BBQ goodness being pumped out by<a href="https://www.facebook.com/bellabbq?fref=ts"> Bella BBQ</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But on the off chance that you haven't heard of them then this food porn filled post should get you excited.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bella uses an old trailer that has been painted bright red and packed with a functioning kitchen and a huge Yoder smoker to pump out it's tasty treats.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KN87O0t7tSA/VWFClj2aKpI/AAAAAAAAA2E/W0JzQTCrknA/s1600/DSC_0191-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="360" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-KN87O0t7tSA/VWFClj2aKpI/AAAAAAAAA2E/W0JzQTCrknA/s640/DSC_0191-01.jpeg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The menu varies from event to event but you can expect to see a wide array of burgers with different meats and sides like buffalo wings and jalapeno poppers and even a smoked hotdog!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's difficult to say what the signature dish would be because everything is pretty darn tasty but there is several equally impressive burgers being made that will leave you salivating when you see them.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Mega burger which is a 600 gram patty stuffed with cheese and jalapenos and a variation stuffed with peanut butter and jelly, both are wrapped in bacon and smoked until juicy and tender and a nice little pink smoke ring has formed on the meat.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uyoyy2gzp-E/VWFC92ky4DI/AAAAAAAAA2s/ZzqLBpISAnA/s1600/DSC_0213-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uyoyy2gzp-E/VWFC92ky4DI/AAAAAAAAA2s/ZzqLBpISAnA/s320/DSC_0213-01.jpeg" width="272" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-06sPId1qxsg/VWFCsTi8ufI/AAAAAAAAA2U/fAf0FRNE6Uc/s1600/DSC_0206-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-06sPId1qxsg/VWFCsTi8ufI/AAAAAAAAA2U/fAf0FRNE6Uc/s320/DSC_0206-01.jpeg" width="260" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As you can see above, the Mega is just that, absolutely huge... </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You will struggle to close the lid of the container it comes in and when you bite into it expect to have it's gooey filling going everywhere. Definitely one to eat outside or with a pile of napkins at your disposal!</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you love Mac N Cheese you will love the next two burgers with the classic Brisket with Mac and Cheese often being one of the first to sell out at Bella.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Slow cooked briskett on a bun with a pile of creamy, cheesy, ooey gooey Mac N Cheese sitting on top which is then drizzled with BBQ sauce leaving the whole thing exploding from the bun.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tKmE6h9alao/VWFC9OqUZwI/AAAAAAAAA2k/Yf7Yvcp6sZI/s1600/DSC_0218-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tKmE6h9alao/VWFC9OqUZwI/AAAAAAAAA2k/Yf7Yvcp6sZI/s400/DSC_0218-01.jpeg" width="355" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The second burger containing Mac N Cheese is really their largest offering, it is a behemoth of a burger with tomato, lettuce, brisket, pulled pork shaped into a patty and topped with Mac N Cheese and BBQ sauce.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2lcNGzRf_Ck/VWFC_qg57RI/AAAAAAAAA20/WGOxRp-wf5M/s1600/DSC_0222-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2lcNGzRf_Ck/VWFC_qg57RI/AAAAAAAAA20/WGOxRp-wf5M/s400/DSC_0222-01.jpeg" width="345" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The third and final burger is not far from being just as big as the previous, The Double Angus has two huge patties, red onion, pickles, mustard, ketchup, BBQ sauce and cheese making it more than just a big brother to the humble cheese burger!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BW7fcvMuvGk/VWFCwE3kMaI/AAAAAAAAA2c/wfpPTUWC2Lo/s1600/DSC_0210-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="388" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BW7fcvMuvGk/VWFCwE3kMaI/AAAAAAAAA2c/wfpPTUWC2Lo/s400/DSC_0210-01.jpeg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
It was great to be able to get in and get photos of all these burgers and taste some of them too, I really enjoyed the Buffalo wings they do so if you get a chance to try them I can highly recommend them but it's hard to go past any of the burgers.<br />
<br />
I should note that they do also do an impressive pulled pork burger but I did not get a photo of that.<br />
<br />
You might look at some of the prices at first glance and think that it seems expensive to pay $14-$20 for a burger but believe me you will wish you'd shared it, these are meals within themselves and you will not need anything else after eating one especially the mega or double.<br />
<br />
You can find Bella BBQ's locations on their social media pages and on their iphone\Android App which also has competitions and can notify you when your burger is ready meaning you don't have to stand around listening for someone to yell out your name.<br />
<br />
Try Bella out if you see them around or if the photos made you hungry go track them down!RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-5387190851402429002015-05-22T15:40:00.004+10:002015-05-23T10:14:10.105+10:00Bloodhound Bar @ Fortitude Valley<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/337/1999604/restaurant/Brisbane/Bloodhound-Fortitude-Valley" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Bloodhound on Urbanspoon" src="http://www.urbanspoon.com/b/link/1999604/minilink.gif" style="border: none; height: 36px; width: 130px;" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With the ever growing amount of new craft beer bars and kitchens popping up around Brisbane you might be struggling to keep up and wondering just what sets one apart from another?</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Well with <a href="http://bloodhoundcornerbar.com.au/">Bloodhound Bar</a> its rather simple, ample taps of good Australian beer and a rather unique menu of rather authentic and well priced South American Food, so how can you go wrong?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The decor is is as you'd expect with exposed brick, high tables, bar seating and a series of booths in the back area for larger groups and it is all tied together with some wicked looking chalk murals.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've now visited Bloodhound two Saturday's in a row for lunch and it's difficult to fault with such a tasty <a href="http://bloodhoundcornerbar.com.au/bloodhound-food.html">menu</a> and a daily lunch special (currently) of 3 taco's for $15.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cpaVdBNvRqU/VVj_DLYv8yI/AAAAAAAAA0c/6RHQ-1d1liU/s1600/IMG_20150516_122037.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cpaVdBNvRqU/VVj_DLYv8yI/AAAAAAAAA0c/6RHQ-1d1liU/s400/IMG_20150516_122037.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far I've tried the Taco Del Perro (Braised beef cheek), Taco Envenenado (Chorizo), Chicharron (Fried pork - so tasty!) and the Tequenos De Queso (Haloumi filled Wonton pastry) and whilst it may be hard to pronounce for a QLD born, generic white guy like me it is all super delicious.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sr4lztxlwVU/VVj_DfDTO5I/AAAAAAAAA0g/NQd8WCfSBfw/s1600/IMG_20150516_121902.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Sr4lztxlwVU/VVj_DfDTO5I/AAAAAAAAA0g/NQd8WCfSBfw/s320/IMG_20150516_121902.jpg" width="285" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Fried wonton pastry stuffed with Haloumi is amazing and worth a visit for it's own, stringy, gooey cheese oozing out everywhere with the crispy wonton making a crunchy pocket to stuff to the avocado salsa into.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The Chicharron (fried pork) is also up there with it's fried porky goodness and for a tiny bit of balance (like you want it with fried pork) just squeeze a lime wedge over the top!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ow8Pnhw3F4M/VVj_DSBFCfI/AAAAAAAAA0k/T7YkH82Png0/s1600/IMG_20150516_121832.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ow8Pnhw3F4M/VVj_DSBFCfI/AAAAAAAAA0k/T7YkH82Png0/s320/IMG_20150516_121832.jpg" width="316" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The taco's themselves are all pretty good too although I am yet to try the Pork taco or the fish one and the second time we had the beef it was slightly inconsistent with an astringent herb dressing on top that was rather bitter and unpleasant but the meat has been delicious both times.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That said the chorizo taco with re-fried beans and jalapenos is my favourite and I've had it enough now to know that I'd easily enjoy 3 of them without trying the others. Skinless chorizo fried in a lump and folded into a taco with re-fried beans and jalapenos? Yes please! and chuck in some avocado or salsa and it's doesn't get any better.</div>
<br />

<br />
Why haven't you talked about the beer though? Well it's a pretty good range of beer with 10 taps as well as bottles and wine, cider and some cocktails on offer.<br />
<br />
It is a mostly Australian tap affair but a few imported beers (NZ, USA) have popped up since the launch just over 2 weeks ago and this isn't a bad thing as Australia is producing so many good beers now you can almost drink local and national and leave imported beers alone at the moment.<br />
<br />
You can get pot, schooner or pint and the prices seem a little high especially for pints of Australian beer but it's only by a dollar or so and it's not the only bar in Brisbane that seems to be increasing prices so this is probably a change we will more of as 2015 rolls on.<br />
<br />
If you haven't been to Bloodhound and you are reading this I hope I've done enough to convince or at least make you crave the amazing food on offer here because it's totally refreshing to me as a cuisine style (for Brisbane) and delicious to boot.RPMhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16241853872426892547noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8966578345351125570.post-10845245838090087702015-05-05T13:47:00.001+10:002015-07-21T09:19:49.765+10:00First Impressions: The Stables - Craft Beer Bar @ Ascot<a href="https://www.zomato.com/brisbane/the-stables-craft-bar-kitchen-ascot-hamilton" target="_blank"><img alt="Click to add a blog post for The Stables Craft Bar & Kitchen on Zomato" src="https://www.zomato.com/logo/17972834/minilink" style="border: none; height: 36px; padding: 0px; width: 130px;" /></a> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I think about craft beer and high quality gastro pub food I usually think of venues in and around the CBD but there is starting to be some change as the craft beer and re-imaged pub food makes its way a bit further from the City. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="http://www.stablescraftbar.com.au/" target="_blank">Stables </a>is located in the middle of busy Racecourse road in Ascot which is really quite a nice spot as you can enjoy the sometimes busy going's on on the outside (especially on market and race days) or just enjoy the great looking exposed brick, dark wood and metal interior of The Stables whilst sipping on a brew or three.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Speaking of beer, there is a nice array of local and national Australian craft on tap and in bottles all displayed a neat little beer menu that sorts them by alcohol % which is pretty great if you aren't sure what to have but you know you are driving.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My only (minor) issue with the tap list is that because it's printed it may not always be 100% up to date, possibly a chalk board would make it easier to maintain a list of current taps.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Stables seems to primarily be for groups of people from 2+ to share and enjoy food and a few drinks rather than catering to hardcore beer nerds and this is perfect for the location where a heavy handed craft bar may not be frequented as much as one with a lighter approach.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Food ranges from olives to sliders to pork belly and even breakfast on the weekends and there really is a good amount to choose from so much so that we went with quite a few dishes to share.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The logistics of sharing them can be a little difficult but once we targeted what we wanted we simply split up the plates so everyone had something to eat from, we went with.. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hop Hog Battered Onion Rings w/ Chipotle Aioli</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Chunky Popcorn Chicken</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Triple Cream Brie Croquettes w/ Chipotle Salsa</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bourbon Glazed Porkbelly Paddle Pops w/ Peppered Sour Cream and Chives</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Szechuan Peppered Squid w/ Asian slaw and Nam Jim</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Wagyu Beef Sliders w/ Bacon, Swiss Cheese and Caramelised Onion</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H-9BB3EwcIU/VUXIkD7Zd0I/AAAAAAAAAzc/ExKBC344Wnc/s1600/DSC_0104-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H-9BB3EwcIU/VUXIkD7Zd0I/AAAAAAAAAzc/ExKBC344Wnc/s1600/DSC_0104-01.jpeg" width="275" /></a>After sipping on a glass of Feral's Hop Hog I dug into the tasty treats we had ordered. Starting with what I'm going to say was the highlight for me, the Brie Croquettes! Creamy, crunchy and almost too much of a mouthful but totally delicious.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Then onto the popcorn chicken which was juicy and tender with a light crunch and presented with a BBQ sauce and garnished with greens and red radish.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O4ojIqNq9_8/VUXI3jSvC7I/AAAAAAAAAz0/AY7M9dyVAb0/s1600/DSC_0115-01.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-O4ojIqNq9_8/VUXI3jSvC7I/AAAAAAAAAz0/AY7M9dyVAb0/s1600/DSC_0115-01.jpeg" width="226" /></a>Onion rings were fluffy and crunchy and some pieces were huge! whilst the Pork was soft and tender although the skin could have been crunchier.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The sliders were tasty but needed a little bit more sauce to make them perfect as the bun was a tiny bit dry, the squid however was just delicious and tender with a nice hit of chilli.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The only thing that was really missing from our table was a good aioli or mayo to cut through BBQ sauce and chilli.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Really the food is the standout at Stables with a little bit of something for everyone, at a glance some things seem a bit pricey but when sharing a few things they do become deceptively filling which makes the value stand out.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Pricing ranges from $9 for hand cut chips up to $16 for the slides.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I really quite enjoyed my experience at Stables, it's a good spot for a few quiet drinks and a nice session of snacking or a quiet lunch and the fact that it's in a location that is for the most part pretty easy to get to and park in just adds to the appeal.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you want a satisfying meal it's worth checking out especially if you are on the north side of the city where we seem to often be forgotten about!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I took way too many food photos so I'll leave a bunch below.</div>
